Diffractive Hard Scattering
نویسنده
چکیده
Diffraction is an old subject which has received much interest in recent years due to the advent of diffractive hard scattering. We discuss some theoretical models and experimental results that have shown new striking effects, e.g. rapidity gaps in jet and W production and in deep inelastic scattering. Many aspects can be described through the exchange of a pomeron with a parton content, but the pomeron concept is nevertheless problematic. New ideas, e.g. based on soft colour interactions, have been introduced to resolve these problems and provide a unified description of diffractive and non-diffractive events. This is part of the general unsolved problem of nonperturbative QCD and confinement.

Factorization and Non-factorization in Diffractive Hard Scattering
Factorization, in the sense defined for inclusive hard scattering, is discussed for diffractive hard scattering. A factorization theorem similar to its inclusive counterpart is presented for diffractive DIS. For hadron-hadron diffractive hard scattering, in contrast to its inclusive counterpart, the expected breakdown of factorization is discussed. Cross section estimates are given from a simpl...
متن کاملProof of Factorization for Diffractive Hard Scattering
A proof is given that hard-scattering factorization is valid for deep-inelastic processes which are diffractive or which have some other condition imposed on the final state in the target fragmentation region.
متن کاملCMS Results on Hard Diffraction
Diffractive processes contribute a significant fraction to the total inelastic proton-proton cross sections at high energies. These reactions can be described in terms of the exchange of a pomeron, a hypothetical object with the quantum numbers of the vacuum. The experimental signatures of diffractive events are the presence of non-exponentially suppressed large rapidity gaps and/or presence of...

Recent experimental results on inclusive diffractive scattering and on exclusive vector meson production are reviewed. The dynamical picture of hard diffraction emerging in perturbative QCD is highlighted.
متن کاملHard scattering factorization and light cone hamiltonian approach to diffractive processes
We describe diffractive deeply inelastic scattering in terms of diffractive parton distributions. We investigate these distributions in a hamiltonian formulation that emphasizes the spacetime picture of diffraction scattering. For hadronic systems with small transverse size, diffraction occurs predominantly at short distances and the diffractive parton distributions can be studied by perturbati...
